Selly Djap took this year as an opportunity to showcase several emerging designers in her Fall/Winter collection titled “Trauma”. The pieces in her show elicit strong emotion through lingerie driven fabrication and design.

The show was largely inspired by Djap’s personal experiences and current the current #MeToo or #WhyIWearBlack movements. Her collection serves to remind women that they are never alone in their recovery process. Djap aims to show women that healing is possible in the form of forgiveness.

Djap’s collection contains nine pieces that illustrate a phase of childhood trauma. From being unaware of the abuse taking place to mentally locking away the abuse, to resisting and shaming the perpetrator, and finally healing from the trauma.

Selly Djap, The Designer

Selly Djap is an Indonesian fashion designer of 10 years who currently resides in New York City. Djap moved to New York City in 2016 to study Fashion Business and Entrepreneurship at New York University. Prior to NYU, she studied fashion at the Bunka School of Fashion in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Selly Djap was raised in the world of fashion, with her parents owning a small fashion company in Jakarta, her mother taking her shopping at a young age, and helping her mother sell clothing by standing on the displays. Now, Djap sees fashion as a powerful tool for self-expression, as each outfit becomes an intimate part of the person who wears it. Her designs allow women to express themselves and empower them, while allowing them to show off their true beauty without fear.
