1. Coffee Festival

69th Regiment Armory (Flatiron)

Fri, Sept 25th-Sun, Sept 27th (Check site for sessions)

Perk up coffee lovers, the New York Coffee Festival is here! While not the capital of the coffee world, New York’s energy, attitude and spunk is definitely fueled by coffee. Java jivers can enjoy bottomless coffee tastings, workshops, demos from famous baristas, street food, brewing competitions, live music and lots more. And, if that’s not a pick-me-up, 50% of the standard ticket value will be donated to Project Waterfall. Tickets start at $20.

2. Taste of Meatpacking

Gansevoort Plaza (Meatpacking)

Sat, Sept 26th from 1-4pm

Taste NYC, at the cobblestoned Gansevoort Plaza, brings 25+ Meatpacking, Chelsea and the West Village’s best restaurants under neat white tents for an afternoon of culinary bites. This year’s participants include: Bagatelle, Bubby’s High Line, Dos Caminos, Fatty Crab, Li-Lac Chocolates, Quarter, Stella Pizza, Tia Pol and others. There is a great neighborhood vibe here, it’s for a good cause and the event is almost completely waste free. $40 for six tastings.

3. Dumpling Diversity

Sara D. Roosevelt Park (Lower East Side)

Sat, Sept 26th from 12-5pm

Pretty much every culture has some kind of version of the dumpling. Asian countries alone have dozens of variants, with Eastern Europe close behind. And that’s without mentioning ravioli and tortelloni. You can’t go wrong with dough and stuffing! The Dumpling Festival celebrates this simple dish by inviting goers to take a culinary dumpling world tour, complete with a dumpling eating contest, cultural performances and games. FREE entry with tasting tickets available at $20 for 4 tastings (Advance tickets are sold out, but you can still go on the day).

4. Shepard Fairey

Jacob Lewis Gallery (Chelsea)

Tues-Fri, 10am-6pm Sat, 11am-6pm

Shepard Fairey, the populist artist and activist behind the iconic Hope poster for Barack Obama and the clothing line OBEY, is having his first New York show in five years. His new show opened last week, and is a series of layered paintings made to look like distressed city wall posters under the title “On Our Hands,” touching on themes of political corruption and environmental issues in the hands of apathetic politicians and large, self-interested corporations. FREE

5. The Bagel Experience

Sadelle’s (Soho)

Tues-Fri 7:30am-3pm Sat-Sun 8am-5pm

We haven’t been this excited about our bagel and lox in a long time. The Jewish bakery/dining hall Sadelle’s has made us fall in love like it’s the first time. Get a few of your best buds together for the smoked fish sampler tower. It arrives at your much coveted table English teatime style; tiers of sable, sturgeon and salmon along with their best accompaniments, tomato, capers, red onion, cukes and cream cheeses.  The bagels (slightly altered but still traditional versions) are neatly stacked on oak dowels. Damn, man…

6. Neo Soul Billie Holiday

Blue Note (West Village)

Mon, Sept 22nd-Sun, Sept 27th at 10:30pm

José James’ sound is hard to categorize as he draws on numerous musical genres–jazz, soul, blues, hip-hop, drum’n’bass–making each one his own. He is a little bit of old and new school, and a whole lot of cool. Come here his downtempo, smooth tribute to his “musical mother,” Billie Holiday. If you are looking to impress somebody, bring him or her to this intimate concert. $20-35.
