Hailing from Providence, Rhode Island, The Dear Hunter began as a side project for Casey Crescenzo in 2004 while there was downtime from his band The Receiving End Of Sirens. A few years later, after parting ways with TREOS, The Dear Hunter became his primary musical focus. Since then, Casey has worked steadily, with six full-length albums, four EPs and two live albums released over the past nine years.

The latest Dear Hunter release, Act IV: Rebirth In Reprise, is a continuation of the six-part series that Casey began with 2006’s Act I: The Lake South, The River North. Books by Casey have been released for prior albums/acts, and per my Q&A with Casey, one for Act IV should be expected at some point. Far in advance of the Act IV book, The Dear Hunter will be appearing at Irving Plaza on October 21st with Chon and Gates as openers.

Casey had great “last words” to offer up within our interview, which I’d assume that many Downtown readers can learn from.

What do you wish more people knew about The Dear Hunter?

Casey Crescenzo: That we exist.

There are a lot of bands with the word “Dear” in their name, or even “Deer.” Other than The Dear Hunter, what is your favorite deer/dear band?

C: I have no idea. Maybe Dear And The Headlights.

The Dear Hunter began as a side-project from The Receiving End Of Sirens, then later became your full-time project? Was there a particular event that sparked The Dear Hunter to become your focus?

C: Yes, I was kicked out of The Receiving End Of Sirens, but had the support of our booking agent and label to continue.

Your tour wraps at Irving Plaza. For someone who hasn’t seen your band live before, how would you describe your live show?

C: I don’t really know. I can only look at it from my perspective, which wouldn’t really convey much to someone who was going to step into anything other than my shoes. I hope that they would be entertained by our band, and join in the experience as much as possible.

What do you remember about your first-ever gig in New York City?

C: Being tremendously overwhelmed by the concept of parking.

What’s ahead for this band after the tour wraps?

C: Some time off from touring. I’m hoping to remain as creatively active as I can be.

Is there another book in the works from you?

C: At the moment, Alex Dandino and I are working on adaptations of the records for graphic novels.

When you’re not busy with your career, how do you like to spend your free time?

C: With my girlfriend and dogs exploring the Pacific Northwest.

Do you have a favorite album of 2015?

C: I’m not completely in the loop of the music from this year. I like Elbow’s most recent EP.

Finally, any last words for the kids?

C: I find that tossing a few dry towels in the dryer with your wet clothes, specifically jeans, helps things dry a bit quicker.
