There’s music in the air this summer…and on your street corner. On June 18th, the Second Annual Pop-Up-Piano campaign will place 88-brightly painted pianos in public areas from Battery Park all the way up to the Bronx.
Pop-Up Pianos was conceived by the Sing for Hope non-profit organization and debuted last summer with 60 pianos across all five boroughs.
Approximately 65 artists and several groups of public school children have been painting and decorating the donated pianos since April at the campaign’s workshop in the ground floor of the former AT&T building at 32 Sixth Ave in Tribeca. Several fashion designers, including Diane von Furstenberg and Isaac Mizrahi, have also lent their decorative talents to the campaign.
The destinations for each of the pianos will be announced on June 10th. but they will be located in multiple downtown locations including Washington Market Park, Tribeca Park, City Hall Park, Battery Park and Stone Street.
The pianos will be covered up at night and will be looked after by members of local organizations, including Friends of Washington Market Park and the Downtown Alliance.
There will also be pop up concerts throughout the month featuring such artists as Sylvana Joyce, who will perform on June 20 from 6 to 6:30 p.m. at Battery Park. People will also have the chance to reserve certain pianos that they want to play in certain locations to host their very own outdoor events.
After the month-long event the pianos will be donated to hospitals and public schools to promote the Sing for Hope mission.
