Mystery Artist Delivers Minimalist Art to Carriage Trade Gallery

Carriage Trade gallery recently launched a new exhibit featuring minimalist artist Henry Codax and his solid colored canvases. With the show’s opening comes a lot of speculation surrounding Codax’s existence. Rumor has it no one has ever seen his face.

The mystery about Codax also stems from the book Reena Spaulings (Semiotext(e)) in which he, the main character, paints monochromatic pieces, just like those on display at Carriage Trade.

Additionally, there is yet another theory that these works were done by two artists: Olivier Mosset, 77, and Jacob Kassay, 27, and presented under a fictional name.

Whether these stories are true or not, they make this mysterious artist’s work all the more interesting to view. The paintings cover the walls of the Carriage Trade gallery located on 62 Walker Street. His 48-inch square canvases and 48-inch by 24-inch rectangular canvases are covered with intriguingly bold colors that light up the gallery.
